EU designates GenX, other chemicals, as high concern

A European Union move to designate four chemicals as substances of very high concern could affect companies including BASF SE, Chemours Netherlands BV and Huntsman Advanced Materials.

The addition of the chemicals to a high-concern list under the EU’s REACH law flags up to companies that the sale or use of the substances in the bloc could be banned unless companies can prove they need specific continued-use authorizations. The European Chemicals Agency July 16 said it had added the substances to the list because they were toxic to reproduction, had endocrine disrupting properties or raised broad-ranging concerns about risks to human health and contamination of the environment.
